To use the Mittelbach/Schoepf font selection scheme with the PLAIN format, one should first acquire the MZ3 (FONTSEL) package. This is available from the Heidelberg repository. Send the mail message to DHDURZ1.bitnet GET FONTSEL PACKAGE if you do not already have the current FONTSEL files. To create the FORMAT based on PLAIN and containing the FONTSEL macros invoke INITEX plain At the * prompt issue \input plainfsl You will need a file FONTDEF.TEX based on the ones in the FONTSEL package, which will be requested by plainfsl. You also need to choose from oldlfonts.sty, newlfonts.sty and basefont.tex, as for generating the LaTeX format. At the end, you will requested to supply a file in place of `anyextra.xyz'. The name of an existing file (perhaps a system null file) must be supplied here. Only one file is accepted, so if you wish to include several files, preloaded fonts etc., a single file which \input's all of the additional files should be made up. Your version of PLAIN.TEX might include numerous preloaded fonts which you never use. Any of the \font\preloaded assignments in PLAIN.TEX may be omitted, so that rarely used fonts are not included in the format. If no errors occur, the file PLAIN.FMT will be created in the current directory (one could invoke INITEX &plain instead of INITEX plain, in which case the created file will have the name PLAINFSL.FMT). Rename the created FMT file to PLF.FMT and move it to the FORMATS directory. One then invokes this format by TEX &PLF followed by the input TeX file name. W.G. Sullivan 19/12/91
